What Can You Put in an S&A Dumpster?

Most household junk, construction and remodeling debris, roofing materials, yard debris, furniture, and many other common materials can be disposed of in an S&A Container Service dumpster. Heavy materials such as concrete, brick, dirt, asphalt, and stone may require a dedicated container, while hazardous materials and certain specialty items require separate disposal.

Not sure about something?  Call us at (631) 648-9088 before loading it. We'll tell you whether it's accepted and help you choose the right dumpster for the material.

Quick Reference Disposal Guide

Choosing the right dumpster starts with knowing what you are throwing away. Disposal regulations, weight allowances, and local environmental laws dictate what can and cannot go into a rental container.

Review this guide before loading your dumpster to avoid extra fees, weight overages, or delayed pickups.

Material Category Examples Status Key Considerations
Standard Household Junk Furniture, clothing, toys, boxes, general clutter Accepted Lightweight, but bulky items consume volume quickly.
Construction Debris Drywall, lumber, framing, tile, cabinetry Accepted Keep dry to prevent unnecessary water weight.
Roofing Materials Asphalt shingles, felt, underlayment, sheathing Accepted Heavy tear-off material; dumpster size and weight allowance should be based on roof size and number of layers.
Yard Debris Branches, brush, lawn clippings, leaves Accepted Must not be mixed with soil or large stumps unless specified.
Heavy Debris Concrete, brick, dirt, asphalt, stone Restricted Special heavy-material dumpsters required; strict weight limits apply.
Appliances & Electronics Washers, dryers, TVs, computers Restricted Refrigerants (Freon) must be drained; small handling fees may apply.
Hazardous Waste Paint, motor oil, batteries, chemicals, asbestos Prohibited Cannot be accepted in a standard dumpster. Requires separate disposal through an appropriate facility or collection program. Must be taken to dedicated municipal collection sites.

Detailed Material Breakdown

Allowed: Couches, tables, chairs, mattresses, box springs, rugs, carpet, clothing, exercise equipment, and general garage or attic clutter.

Loading Advice: Break down large furniture and box loose items to maximize your container’s volume. Make the job easier with our residential dumpster services.

Allowed: Sheetrock/drywall, wood studs, plywood, laminate flooring, subflooring, siding, insulation, cabinetry, and fixtures.

Loading Advice: Nails and sharp objects should face inward. Do not load materials above the top rim of the dumpster.

If you’re working on a remodeling project at a commercial site, we provide specific loading advice and solutions with our commercial dumpster rental services.

Allowed: Asphalt shingles, roofing felt, underlayment, plywood sheathing, flashing, and other common roofing tear-off debris.

Loading Advice: Roofing materials can become extremely heavy, especially with multiple layers of shingles or wet material. Let us know the approximate roof size and number of layers being removed so we can recommend the appropriate dumpster size and weight allowance. You can learn more about this in our Roofing Dumpster Guide.

Allowed: Clean concrete, brick, pavers, dirt, sand, asphalt, and gravel.

Special Rules: Due to strict highway transport weight limits, heavy materials can easily overload a standard dumpster.

If you’re concerned about the weight of your debris, read our Dumpster Weight & Tonnage Guide for more assistance and details before starting your project.

Allowed: Branches, brush, leaves, grass clippings, and other common yard debris.

Special Rules: Light brush and tree limbs may be handled differently than large trunks, stump sections, and oversized wood material, which can carry significantly higher disposal costs. Let us know if your project involves large trunks or stumps so we can confirm the proper disposal method and provide accurate pricing.

Allowed: Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, washers, dryers, microwaves, televisions, and monitors.

Special Rules: Units containing Freon or coolants must be professionally drained and certified before placement, or processed under special handling fees.

To protect local landfills, make sure worker safety, and comply with environmental laws, the following items cannot be placed in a standard S&A Container Service dumpster unless specifically approved or handled through an appropriate disposal method:

  • Paints, Stains & Solvents Liquid latex, oil-based paints, varnishes, and paint thinners (dried paint cans with lids off are permitted).
  • Automotive Fluids & Batteries Motor oil, gasoline, transmission fluid, antifreeze, and lead-acid car batteries.
  • Hazardous Chemicals Pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, household cleaners, and industrial solvents.
  • Flammable & Explosive Materials Propane tanks, fuel tanks, kerosene heaters, ammunition, and fireworks.
  • Medical & Biohazardous Waste Needles, medical tubing, or contaminated materials.
  • Asbestos Any material containing asbestos fiber must be handled by a certified hazardous waste contractor.
Note:

Loading prohibited items will result in removal delays, mandatory sorting fees, or municipal fines passed on from disposal facilities.

Materials requiring special handling for dumpster disposal

Materials That May Require Special Handling

Certain materials may require separate disposal, additional processing, or approval before being placed in the dumpster. Examples can include pressure-treated lumber, railroad ties, dock pilings, large tree trunks and stumps, tires, mattresses, appliances, electronics, and other unusual construction or commercial debris.

Disposal requirements can vary by material and facility, so if you are unsure about an item, contact S&A Container Service before loading it into the dumpster. Confirming the material ahead of time can help avoid additional charges, rejected loads, or pickup delays.

How Material Type Impacts Your Price & Weight Limit

Every dumpster rental includes a specific weight allowance (measured in tons). Exceeding this limit incurs overage charges, as landfills charge disposal fees strictly by weight.

1

Volume vs. Weight: Light, bulky items (like couches or insulation) fill space fast but rarely exceed weight limits. Dense items (like wet roofing shingles, plaster, dirt, or tile) reach weight thresholds very quickly.

2

Water Weight: Wet material adds significant tonnage. Keep rain and snow out of your dumpster by covering it with a tarp during heavy weather.

3

Mixed Loads: Mixing heavy masonry with general trash can cause the dumpster to exceed legal transport limits. When in doubt, separate heavy fill from general junk.

Volume vs. Weight Matters

Household cleanouts are generally more volume-driven than weight-driven. Furniture, boxes, clothing, household items, and general clutter can consume a tremendous amount of container space without necessarily creating an unusually heavy load. For these projects, choosing a slightly larger dumpster can sometimes be more economical than filling a smaller container and paying for an additional haul.

Construction and demolition projects require a different calculation. Materials such as drywall, plaster, roofing shingles, tile, mortar, flooring, and other building debris can consume container space while also adding substantial weight. For these projects, both volume and expected disposal weight need to be considered when selecting the right dumpster.

This is why our recommendations are based on more than simply asking how much debris you have. Understanding what you're throwing away, how much space it will occupy, and how heavy the material is likely to become helps us recommend the most cost-effective container for the job.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Materials Accepted

Yes, in most locations. However, because mattresses require specialized recycling processes at landfills, some municipalities assess a small per-item surcharge.

If spotted during pickup, our driver may not be able to haul the load until the item is removed. If discovered at the transfer station, the facility will issue a handling fee that will be added to your final invoice.

If the paint is latex, pour cat litter or paint hardener into the can and let it dry completely. Once hardened solid, it can be thrown into the dumpster with the lid off. Liquid paint is never allowed.

Debris must be level with or below the top rim of the container. Overfilled dumpsters cannot be safely tarped for highway transport and cannot be picked up until leveled.

Not Sure If Your Material Is Accepted?

If you're unsure whether a material can go into your dumpster, contact us before loading it. Tell us what you're disposing of, approximately how much material you have, and whether different debris types will be mixed together.

Our team can help determine the appropriate dumpster size, weight allowance, and disposal method before the container arrives helping you avoid unnecessary disposal charges, rejected materials, or pickup delays.
