| Project Element | Common Waste Materials | Disposal & Loading Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinets & Storage | Wooden cabinets, vanities, island framing, shelving | Break down boxes and flat-pack lumber to maximize container space. |
| Countertops | Granite, quartz, laminate, butcher block, concrete | Heavy materials—distribute weight evenly across the bottom of the container. |
| Tile & Flooring | Ceramic/porcelain tile, backer board, vinyl, hardwood, linoleum | Tile and mortar add weight fast; keep total volume within your weight limit. |
| Walls & Ceilings | Drywall/sheetrock, plaster, lath, insulation | Drywall absorbs water rapidly—keep the dumpster tarped during rain. |
| Plumbing & Fixtures | Toilets, porcelain sinks, fiberglass tubs, cast iron tubs | Heavy cast iron tubs and other dense fixtures can add substantial weight to a load. Let our team know if these materials will be included so we can help recommend the appropriate dumpster size and weight allowance. |
Choosing the right dumpster size depends on the scale of your tear-out and the density of your materials.
If your driveway cannot accommodate the dumpster and placement must be on a public street, S&A Container Service can help guide you through local municipality permit requirements.
Ensure clear overhead clearance from low-hanging tree branches or power lines, and leave enough space for delivery trucks to maneuver safely when the dumpster is delivered.
Old kitchen refrigerators or wine coolers containing refrigerants such as Freon require special handling. Let us know in advance so we can ensure proper processing.
Kitchen and bathroom renovations can be deceptive when choosing a dumpster because the project may not look particularly large, but the debris can become heavy very quickly. A bathroom containing tile, mortar, plaster and a cast iron tub can have very different disposal requirements than a similarly sized project consisting primarily of cabinets, drywall and lightweight fixtures.
When customers call S&A Container Service for a remodeling project, we don't recommend a dumpster based only on the size of the room. We ask what is being removed, how extensive the demolition will be, whether walls or flooring are coming out, and whether heavy materials such as tile, plaster, masonry or cast iron are involved.
One of the most common mistakes is choosing a smaller dumpster simply to reduce the initial rental price. For a project that generates a significant amount of debris, ordering the appropriately sized dumpster and paying an additional $100–$200 in disposal weight can often be less expensive than paying for multiple smaller dumpsters or additional swaps.
The important thing to remember is that the weight of the debris does not change based on the size of the dumpster. If a remodeling project generates three tons of debris, that material will still weigh approximately three tons whether it is loaded into one appropriately sized container or divided between two smaller dumpsters. The difference is that using multiple containers can add additional hauling, delivery, pickup or swap costs.
This is why we consider both volume and expected disposal weight when recommending a dumpster. The goal isn't necessarily to choose the smallest container with the lowest initial price; it's to choose the container that is likely to provide the lowest overall cost for the entire project while allowing the debris to be loaded and transported safely.
Keep your renovation clean, organized, and compliant. The experts at S&A Container Service are ready to help you choose the right container size, schedule prompt drop-offs, and make disposal simple from start to finish.
